OpenAI Is Building a Phone With Apple's Own Suppliers To Take On Apple

Every smartphone today is built around apps. You tap through layers of interfaces to get things done. OpenAI apparently wants to replace all of that with a phone where AI agents are the entire interface.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has one of the best track records on Apple hardware predictions, reported on April 27 that OpenAI is working with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare, one of Apple's own manufacturing partners, on a custom smartphone. Mass production target is 2028. Specs and suppliers are expected to be locked down by late 2026.

Sam Altman posted the day before the report that it feels like the right time to rethink how operating systems and user interfaces are designed, with a protocol equally usable by people and agents. That post reads differently now.

The strategic logic is straightforward. Right now OpenAI is stuck inside Apple and Google's hardware, where those companies control what AI features get deep system access and what doesn't. Building their own phone means controlling every layer, the chip, the OS, and the AI stack, the same way Apple's custom silicon gave it a performance edge no Android phone has matched.

Whether OpenAI can actually execute on this is a completely different question. They have never shipped consumer hardware. The earbuds codenamed Sweetpea, expected September 2026, will be the first real signal of whether they can.
