We've run 200+ scans with our AEO Checker. The same 5 problems show up again and again - across industries, platforms, and website sizes.

The uncomfortable part? Most of these sites rank fine on Google. They have good Lighthouse scores. They look professional.
But when you ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews about their industry - they don't exist.
Here's why.
This is the most surprising one. We found it on sites that clearly had no intention of blocking AI - it just happened by accident.
GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended - these are the bots that feed AI engines. If they're blocked, it doesn't matter how good your content is. AI never sees it.
Check yours right now: go to yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow rules that might be catching these bots.
Having schema is not enough. We see this constantly - a site has Organization schema, which is a good start. But it's missing:
sameAs links (LinkedIn, Google Business, Crunchbase) - this is how AI connects your website to your real-world entity
Service schema - AI doesn't know what you actually sell
FAQPage schema - even when a FAQ section visually exists on the page
Incomplete schema sends a blurry signal. AI engines need clarity to cite you confidently.
Google rewards well-written paragraphs. AI engines reward direct answers.
The format AI can extract looks like this: a clear heading that asks a question, followed immediately by a 40-60 word paragraph that answers it directly.
Most websites aren't written this way. Long paragraphs, no direct answers under headings, information buried three scrolls deep. AI can't extract a citable response - so it finds someone who makes it easier.
AI builds a "picture" of who you are by connecting signals across the web. Your website, your LinkedIn, your Google Business profile, mentions in other articles - all of it.
If your business description is different on every platform, if your social profiles are incomplete, if nobody outside your own website mentions you - AI gets a blurry picture and skips the citation.
Entity clarity is one of the highest-impact fixes and one of the most ignored.
This is the hardest one to fix fast - but it matters the most.
AI engines heavily weight third-party mentions. If your name only appears on your own website, AI treats you as unverified. It's similar to E-E-A-T in SEO, but more extreme.
Getting mentioned on Dev.to, industry directories, Clutch, niche communities, partner websites - these signals tell AI "this business is real and others trust it."
It's rarely one problem. It's always a combination - blocked bots + incomplete schema + no external mentions. Each one reduces your visibility. Together they make you invisible.
The fix isn't complicated. It just requires knowing what to look for.
