Jobs at Fearless
About this Opportunity
Fearless is excited to launch our internship program in partnership with the Maryland Lighthouse AI Initiative. This program provides college students, recent graduates, and career changers with real-world experience in the government technology industry. Interns will gain hands-on technical skills alongside a broad set of professional skills — including interviewing, resume building, and networking — to support job readiness and long-term career growth. This internship will begin June 1 and end on August 14, 2026
As a Frontend Engineer Intern on the Maryland Digital Service (MDWDS) team, you will help build and enhance the reusable web components that power digital services for the people of Maryland. Your work will directly improve how Marylanders interact with their government online — from how forms render, to how content is structured, to how accessible those experiences are for every user.
This role focuses on modern JavaScript, accessibility, and scalable UI patterns implemented as web components. You'll own scoped UI tickets with measurable deliverables, contribute to a shared design system, and learn what it looks like to ship code that serves the public.
Build and modify reusable web components used across Maryland digital services
Implement UI enhancements and quality-of-life improvements based on team and stakeholder feedback
Investigate and resolve frontend defects with clear, well-tested fixes
Improve styling, accessibility, and overall usability of components and pages
Help maintain and improve component documentation so other engineers can adopt and extend the system confidently
Participate in agile ceremonies — standups, sprint planning, retros — and contribute to team discussions and code reviews
Own scoped frontend tickets end-to-end, from understanding the problem through merging your pull request
Awareness of JavaScript foundation, including comfort with modern language features
Interest in learning or prior exposure to a JavaScript framework such as Svelte, Vue, or Ember
Awareness of or interest in learning modern HTML, CSS, and JavaScript including "widely available" web platform features from the last ~3 years
Awareness of or interest in learning Git and GitHub workflows (branching, pull requests, code review)
Ability to work independently on scoped frontend tasks while knowing when to ask for help
Strong written and verbal communication skills
A collaborative mindset — we work as a team and value the people on it
Motivation to learn new skills and frameworks
A genuine passion for helping your community
