UI/UX Design Intern

Sophinea is an AI, data, and analytics firm in Manassas, Virginia, serving federal and commercial clients since 2018. We build AI products, including Halo, our secure AI and analytics platform.

As a UI/UX Design Intern, you'll help design how people interact with AI and data products, from dashboards to mobile and web apps. You'll work on real products alongside our engineers, not side projects.

What you'll do:

• Design wireframes, user flows, and high-fidelity mockups for web and mobile products

• Build interactive prototypes to test ideas before engineering starts

• Run lightweight user research: interviews, usability tests, and synthesis

• Contribute components and patterns to our design system

• Design dashboards and data visualizations that make complex information easy to read

• Hand off designs to developers and review what ships

A typical day might include a team standup, a few hours in Figma on a new feature, a usability session with a test user, and a design review with the engineering team.

This is a paid, part-time, semester-long internship (about 10-15 hours per week), hybrid in Manassas, VA.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in UX, interaction design, graphic design, HCI, or a related field

• A portfolio that shows your design process, not just final screens

• Working knowledge of Figma or a similar tool

• Understanding of usability principles and accessibility basics (WCAG)

• Clear communication and comfort receiving feedback

• Able to work on-site in Manassas on hybrid days

Nice to have:

• Experience designing dashboards or data-heavy interfaces

• Familiarity with Apple Human Interface Guidelines or Material Design

• Basic HTML/CSS

• Interest in AI products and how people build trust in them

Benefits

• Paid internship

• Flexible part-time schedule built around your class load

• Hybrid work: on-site collaboration in Manassas plus remote days

• Portfolio-ready work on products used by real clients

• Mentorship from Sophinea's design and engineering team

• Exposure to AI, analytics, and federal technology work
