The severity of these injuries ranges from minor sprains and marks to more serious fractures or tears in ligaments. Sports injuries can be due to various reasons, such as collisions, injuries or overexertion, a mistaken method of approach, inadequate warm-up, or a lack of conditioning.
Sports injuries can be classified into two distinct classes: acute injuries and injuries from overuse.
Acute injuries happen in a flash and often are the result of an event that is stressful. The most common causes of these injuries are an abrupt collision, fall, or violent motion. The most frequent acute injuries include fractures, strains, sprains, dislocations, contusions, and sprains.
A sprain causes injury to ligaments, which could be the tough bands of tissue that connect bones. In a sprain, the joint is forced beyond its normal mobility, which results in stretching or tears to the ligaments. The most common areas of sprains are the knee, ankle, or wrist.
Dr. Jordan Sudberg says Stress refers to injuries to muscle tissues or tendons, which could comprise the fibrous structures connecting muscles and bones. Strains can develop when tendons or muscle tissue are stretched too far or torn. Most strains are hamstring, quadriceps, or calf muscle mass.
Fractures are cracks or breaks in bones. They can be caused by a direct blow, fall, or an excessive amount of pressure that is applied to bones. The severity of fractures can differ and range from hairline fractures to final breaks. They might require surgery or immobilization intervention to allow for a proper recovery.
