Hide Profile is a free, open-source Chrome extension that takes profile pictures out of your social feeds, so you judge the idea, not the face behind it.
Faces anchor how we read. The same words land differently under a famous face, a familiar one, or a stranger's. Hide Profile removes that bias with one click.
Three styles: Blur, Hide (neutral placeholder), or Replace every avatar with one of 7 presets or your own image
Reveal on hover: peek at the real picture whenever you want
Smart detection: catches small, round avatars that site rules miss, so it keeps working after redesigns
Works where you scroll: X, LinkedIn, Peerlist, YouTube (channel avatars and video thumbnails), GitHub, Reddit, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, Bluesky, DEV and Medium
Per-site toggles, plus Alt+Shift+H to switch everything on or off
Clean language: masks swear words in English, Hinglish and Hindi, including look-alikes like f*ck and sh1t
Blur media: post images, thumbnails and videos stay blurred until you hover
Zero network requests, zero analytics, zero dependencies, and just one permission (storage). Everything stays in your browser.
The page is never rewritten. Avatars get a data attribute and one injected stylesheet does the rest, applied before paint, so there's no flash of the real photo and it never fights React. A MutationObserver keeps up with infinite scroll.
Clone the repo, open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode and click Load unpacked. Works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc and other Chromium browsers.
Contributions welcome: adding a new site is a one-line PR.
