Currently, Carrots are mostly cultivated and harvested manually by subsistence farmers. Manual harvesting involves a lot of drudgery, hence with small-scale farmers in mind, a low cost vegetable harvester was designed and evaluated for performance in harvesting. The main components of the machine are the frame, the reciprocating blade and gripper which pull the vegetables out of the soil with a near vertical motion. The machine can be either rolled or a motor can be added and the forward momentum was provided by the pushing action of the operator. The performance of the harvester was evaluated using software such as SAM for analyzing the mechanism design and the 3D model was designed in Solid works. The result of the tests performed on the machine shows that it is appropriate for adoption by small scale farmers.
