The idea that anyone can achieve anything with sheer hard work has become a popular mantra. While effort is undoubtedly critical, the role of natural ability often goes unspoken. In reality, success is rarely about just one or the other—it’s about how these two elements work together.
Reflecting on my own career, starting with a tech startup in 2015 and growing into my current role at Activision Blizzard King, I’ve seen how effort and natural ability both shape outcomes. At 99Digitech, where I co-founded the 99Pencils App, it wasn’t just about putting in hours. It required an understanding of technology and user needs that came almost instinctively.
But hard work isn’t a replacement for ability, nor is ability a free pass to success. A perfect example of this balance is Ratan Tata. His leadership transformed Tata Group into a global powerhouse, but it wasn’t solely his work ethic that made him a legend. His insight, empathy, and vision for long-term success were innate qualities he honed over time.
This brings us to a critical realization: not everyone is born with the same strengths, but everyone can improve on what they do have. Hard work is like a sculptor’s chisel—it refines and enhances what’s already there. Without it, even the most talented individual may fall short.
The notion that “anyone can do anything” can be misleading. It’s more empowering—and truthful—to acknowledge that people are naturally better suited to certain things. Effort then becomes the force that unlocks potential, not the magic ingredient that creates it from scratch.
What makes the journey meaningful isn’t trying to be someone you’re not, but identifying where your strengths lie and channeling your efforts in those directions. Talent sets the foundation, and hard work builds the structure. Together, they create the kind of success that is both achievable and deeply rewarding.
Rather than getting lost in debates over what matters more, let’s embrace the magic that happens when effort and ability come together. Success isn’t about choosing one path over another—it’s about discovering the harmony between your strengths and your determination. True achievement lies in breaking free from predefined formulas and creating a journey that’s uniquely and unapologetically yours.
