The End of Envato as We Know It: Why July 2026 Changes Everything for Digital Product Creators

For over a decade, Envato’s ThemeForest and CodeCanyon were the go-to marketplaces for digital product creators. But in 2026, a slow decline has accelerated into a structural crisis – and a new policy taking effect July 1st may be the final signal that the golden era is over.

What’s changing:

Starting July 1, 2026, Envato is eliminating its exclusive author tiers. Previously, authors who sold exclusively through Envato could earn up to 75% per sale. The new policy: 50% flat – regardless of your sales history, Elite status, or exclusivity commitment.

Why it matters:

This isn’t just a fee change. It’s a signal. Envato has been shifting resources toward Elements (their subscription product) for years. The marketplace is being deprioritized. Traffic is declining. Discovery is harder. And now, the financial incentive to stay exclusive is gone.

What the numbers look like:

  • An item priced at $49: from ~$36.75 to $24.50 per sale

  • On 1,000 sales/year: from $36,750 → $24,500 – a $12,250 annual loss

  • Authors WILL raise prices to compensate. Buyers will feel it.

The opportunity:

This moment – painful as it is – is also the clearest signal to build your own distribution
