A practical buyer's guide to RTK and NTRIP correction services

If you want centimeter-level accuracy from your drone, tractor, robot or GNSS rover, you need an RTK correction signal. Most people get one through an RTK subscription, also called an NTRIP subscription. The market has grown fast in recent years, and prices and conditions vary wildly. This guide walks through the provider types, the real cost structure, and the questions to answer before you commit.
RTK stands for Real-Time Kinematic. A standard GPS position is accurate to a few meters. RTK corrections bring that down to 1 to 2 centimeters. The corrections come from fixed reference stations and reach your receiver over the internet using the NTRIP protocol.
An RTK subscription gives you access to such a network of reference stations, so you do not have to buy, install and maintain your own base station. One thing that surprises many first-time buyers: you usually need one subscription per receiver. If you run multiple machines or rovers, that multiplies.
Almost every country has the same five categories. Knowing which one you are looking at makes comparing much easier.
1. National or regional CORS networks. Government-run or certified commercial networks, often used for cadastral and legal surveying. Very reliable, sometimes mandatory for official work, but typically limited to one country and priced accordingly.
2. Commercial VRS networks. Networks like Trimble VRS Now or Topcon's services. Professional grade, but usually tied to annual contracts per receiver, and coverage stops at borders.
3. Brand-locked networks. John Deere, Trimble and CNH (Case IH, New Holland) run their own RTK ecosystems. The catch is rarely the subscription price itself: it is the RTK license or unlock you often need on the receiver before third-party or even first-party corrections work at all. That license can cost more than years of subscription fees. Always check whether your terminal allows generic NTRIP before assuming you are locked in.
4. Free community networks. RTK2Go and Centipede offer free correction streams from volunteer-run stations. Great for hobby projects and testing. For professional work, the lack of uptime guarantees and support is a real risk: if the one station near your field goes offline during planting season, you are stopped.
5. Decentralized networks. The newest category. GEODNET is the largest example: a decentralized network that has grown since 2021 to more than 21,000 reference stations in over 140 countries. Station operators earn rewards for providing coverage, which is why the network keeps densifying. Comparing headline prices is not enough. The total cost has four parts:
The subscription itself. Usually per receiver, per month or per year. Yearly is cheaper per month; monthly gives flexibility for seasonal work.
SIM card and data. NTRIP needs an internet connection. Some providers bundle a SIM, most do not. Budget a data plan per machine if your equipment is not already online.
RTK license or activation. The hidden cost of brand-locked systems, as described above. This is where "cheap" subscriptions become expensive.
Contract duration. A one-year commitment is standard at traditional networks. If you only survey a few months per year, a monthly plan or even a day pass can cut your cost dramatically.

Coverage where you actually work. Not the country average, your fields, your sites, your flight areas. If you work across borders, a network with international coverage saves you from juggling multiple subscriptions. Most providers publish a coverage map; check the distance to the nearest station. Under roughly 25 km you can expect a solid network fix.
Contract flexibility. Can you pay monthly? Is there a day pass? Seasonal users often pay for eight idle months on yearly contracts without realizing there are alternatives.
NTRIP and RTCM compatibility. Any modern receiver with an NTRIP client can use a generic RTK subscription: Emlid, u-blox, Septentrio, Trimble, Leica, Topcon rovers, DJI enterprise drones, ArduPilot autopilots, and most current tractor terminals. Check that the network supports the constellations your receiver uses (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou).
Brand restrictions. The mirror image of the previous point. Some displays and receivers only accept their manufacturer's correction service unless you buy an unlock. Verify this before subscribing to anything.
Number of devices. One subscription usually means one device connected at a time. Running a fleet? Ask about multi-license or enterprise pricing instead of stacking consumer plans.
Support and reliability. When your rover shows FLOAT instead of FIX on the morning of a deadline, you want someone who answers. This is the real difference between free community streams and paid services. Ask how support is organized and in which time zone.
A free trial. Signal stability in your specific area is the only thing that matters, and the only way to know is to test. Serious providers offer a trial. RTKsub, for example, gives 30 days free without a credit card, so you can verify FIX performance on your own equipment before paying anything.
Two honest exceptions. If your national regulations require a certified network for cadastral or legal measurements, use the certified network for that work. And if you operate in an area with no station within about 25 km of your site, a network fix becomes unreliable; a local base station on site (or contributing a permanent station to a decentralized network) is the better setup.
For everything else, from drone mapping and precision agriculture to construction machine control and robotics, a flexible, brand-independent RTK subscription is the simplest route to centimeter accuracy.
Do not choose on price alone. Check coverage in your working area, contract flexibility, NTRIP/RTCM compatibility with your receiver, hidden license costs, device count, and support. Then shortlist two providers and actually test one on your own equipment. A trial costs you an afternoon; a wrong yearly contract costs you a season.
