PlugNPlay — A clearer view of your system’s security
PlugNPlay is an interactive security auditing tool built in Python for Windows and Linux. Published on GitHub as The Ultimate IT Scanner, it brings system profiling, local port checks, security status checks, and vulnerability lookups into one workflow.
I built it to make those first steps of inspecting a machine easier: understand the system, review its security settings, and produce a report you can actually use.
What it does
• System profiling: Collects operating system information to establish the context for an audit.
• Local port checks: Inspects loopback ports to identify services listening locally.
• Security status checks: Reviews firewall and anti-malware status, with available checks depending on the operating system and permissions.
• CVE lookups: Retrieves OS-related vulnerability information from the NIST National Vulnerability Database.
• Report exports: Produces HTML reports for reading and JSON output for further processing.
Who it’s for
PlugNPlay is for cybersecurity learners, IT support staff, and analysts who want a repeatable starting point for reviewing a Windows or Linux machine. It helps bring scattered checks together and gives you findings to investigate further.
The goal is visibility. A CVE match is a lead to investigate, not proof that a machine is vulnerable. PlugNPlay supports that investigation; it does not replace endpoint protection, continuous monitoring, or a complete security assessment.
The project website
I also created a dedicated website where visitors can explore the tool’s features, try an illustrative report preview, and access the source code and setup instructions. The website itself does not scan your device—the auditing tool runs locally.
Why I’m building it
PlugNPlay is part of my journey of learning cybersecurity by building practical tools. It gives me a way to apply what I learn about operating systems, security checks, and reporting to a project that other people can inspect and try.
I’m continuing to improve it, and I welcome reproducible bug reports, suggestions, and honest feedback—especially from people testing it across different Windows and Linux environments.
