Auth.js, formerly known as NextAuth.js, is now officially maintained by the Better Auth team.
It’s one of the most widely used open-source authentication libraries in the JavaScript ecosystem—used by platforms like ChatGPT, Cal.com, and Google Labs.
As apps grew more complex, Auth.js started showing limitations—especially around OAuth and session management.
Better Auth was born from the same frustrations, aiming to simplify and modernize auth workflows.
The two teams aligned in vision, making Better Auth the new home for Auth.js..
No disruption: Auth.js will continue receiving security patches and urgent fixes.
For new projects, Better Auth is recommended—unless you need stateless sessions without a DB (which is on their roadmap).
Migration guides from NextAuth and Clerk to Better Auth are available.
More documentation and tooling are coming to ease the transition.
Core contributors like Balázs, Thang Vu, Nico Domino, Lluis Agusti, and Falco Winkler kept Auth.js alive through tough phases—making this handoff possible.
“The end goal remains unchanged: you should own your auth.”
