Hugging Face x GitHub Copilot Chat in VS Code

Hugging Face has launched an integration that lets developers use open-source LLMs like Kimi K2, DeepSeek V3.1, and GLM 4.5 directly inside GitHub Copilot Chat in Visual Studio Code. No more switching tabs or juggling APIs.

🔧 How It Works

  • Install the Hugging Face Copilot Chat extension.

  • Open VS Code’s chat interface.

  • Select Hugging Face as the provider.

  • Enter your Hugging Face token and choose models.

  • Seamlessly switch between models using the built-in picker.

⚠️ Requires VS Code version 1.104.0 (August 2025 release).

💡 Why It Matters

  • Access cutting-edge open models for coding, research, or domain-specific tasks.

  • Avoid vendor lock-in with Hugging Face’s unified API.

  • Drop-in compatibility with OpenAI’s chat completions API.

  • Free monthly inference credits + Pro/Team/Enterprise tiers with transparent pricing.

This move expands Copilot Chat beyond proprietary models, giving devs like you more flexibility and firepower right inside your editor. Want help setting it up or comparing models for your stack?
