Meta to donate React and React Native to the Linux Foundation

🏛️ Big Announcement at React Conf

Meta revealed it will donate its popular JavaScript libraries — React and React Native — to the Linux Foundation, which will establish a new React Foundation to steward their future.

🤝 Founding Members

The React Foundation will include:

  • Meta

  • Amazon

  • Microsoft

  • Vercel

  • Callstack

  • Expo

  • Software Mansion

Seth Webster, currently head of React at Meta, will serve as the foundation’s executive director.

🔧 What the Foundation Will Do

  • Govern React and React Native development

  • Manage core infrastructure

  • Organize community events (including React Conf)

  • Launch programs to foster collaboration

💬 Why It Matters

Jim Zemlin of the Linux Foundation called it “a natural next step” to ensure React remains open and community-led. Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth emphasized React’s impact: over 20 million developers use it across platforms like mobile, desktop, TVs, gaming consoles, and VR headsets
