Twenty second test: open Spotlight and search for a word you know is written inside one of your screenshots. Nothing comes back. Those files have no text layer, so there is nothing for Spotlight to index.

Tidy is a macOS menu bar app that reads images and PDFs with Apple's on-device text recognition and names each file from what is written inside it. "Screenshot 2026-08-14 at 14.22.10.png" becomes "invoice-mueller-gmbh-03-07-2026.png". Everything it reads goes into a local index, so you can also find a file by a word that is inside it.

It files Downloads and the Desktop with rules, and if you move three files to the same folder by hand it notices and offers to write the rule for you. One click to accept, one to dismiss forever.
