From traditional SEO rankings to AI citations — why we created StarNama.

How We Built an AI Visibility Checker for ChatGPT, Gemini & Perplexity

For years, SEO tools focused on Google rankings, backlinks, and keywords.

But in 2026, a new challenge emerged:

How often does your brand appear inside AI answers?

A website can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity.

This problem led us to build StarNama.

The Problem

AI search works differently from traditional search engines.

Instead of showing a list of blue links, AI systems generate answers.

That means visibility is no longer just about rankings.

Today brands need to track:

  • AI mentions

  • AI citations

  • Brand recognition

  • Entity strength

  • AI crawler accessibility

Many studies show that AI visibility and traditional SEO visibility are not the same thing. A site can perform well in search while receiving little exposure in AI-generated answers.

Why Existing SEO Tools Are Not Enough

Most SEO platforms answer questions like:

  • Are my pages indexed?

  • What keywords do I rank for?

  • How many backlinks do I have?

But they don't answer:

  • Does ChatGPT know my brand?

  • Does Gemini cite my website?

  • Does Perplexity reference my content?

  • Can AI crawlers access my pages?

These questions are becoming increasingly important as AI-driven discovery grows.

Building StarNama

We started with a simple goal:

Create a platform that measures AI visibility the same way SEO tools measure search visibility.

StarNama analyzes:

  • Google Indexability

  • Bing Indexability

  • AI Visibility

  • Brand Entity Strength

  • AI Crawler Access

  • Technical SEO Signals

The goal is to help website owners understand how discoverable they are in modern AI systems.

What We Learned

During development, several patterns became clear:

1. AI visibility is not SEO visibility

Strong Google rankings don't guarantee AI citations.

2. Structured content matters

Clear headings, concise answers, FAQs, and well-organized information perform better in AI retrieval systems.

3. Entity recognition is critical

AI systems rely heavily on understanding brands and entities consistently across the web.

4. Technical accessibility still matters

If crawlers cannot access content, AI systems may never see it.

The Future

We believe AI visibility will become as important as SEO visibility.

Website owners will need to monitor:

  • Search rankings

  • AI mentions

  • AI citations

  • Brand authority

  • Entity recognition

The web is moving from "ranking in search results" to "being included in AI answers."
