From UX Designer to Product Owner:

A Journey of Growth, Empathy, and Responsibility

From UX Designer to Product Owner:

A few months back, I picked up the roles and responsibilities of a Product Owner, along with some tasks of a Scrum Master and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences.

I’ve learned so much. Not just about the process, but about people, collaboration, and empathy.

At Techvito, we create Jira stories that go beyond simple descriptions. Our goal is to write stories so detailed that a developer, a tester, or even a layman can understand what needs to be done, why it’s being done, and how it ties back to the bigger picture. This practice has helped me grow tremendously.

  • It’s made me better at understanding people, which directly helps when I interview users as a UX Designer.

  • It’s made me more empathetic toward developers, realizing how much effort goes into building something that looks “simple” on the surface.

Now, whenever I design, I consciously think about how feasible my ideas are for the developers balancing creativity with practicality.

Taking responsibility in this role feels different. I’ve led before, during my time with the NGO U&I but leading in a product setup brings its own challenges. As a designer, you don’t always know what your developer is facing, yet as a product owner, you’re responsible for ensuring things move forward smoothly.

One of the toughest but most valuable lessons has been learning to shield your team during tough times making sure they’re not unfairly in the spotlight when something breaks or doesn’t go as planned.

There are days when things feel overwhelming, when everything’s on fire and you’re not sure how to help and in those moments, I’ve been lucky to have an incredible manager who guides me, reminds me that some situations are simply beyond control, and helps me find the right way forward.

It’s been a beautiful journey, sometimes chaotic, sometimes challenging, but always something new to learn and full of growth.

Every day brings a new learning, and I’m loving this process.

I am hoping to grow into a Product Owner everyone loves working with.
