Addressing commonly asked questions from a Principal UX Designer’s Perspective

As a UX designer for 20 years and a career mentor for 3 years, there are some common questions I encounter. In the spirit of sharing knowledge, I’ve decided to share them with you all, because sharing fosters growth and learning!
How to decide if I want to be an IC or a manager?
This is a question I’ve asked myself many times over the years. Ultimately, I decided to remain an Individual Contributor (IC) because I want to be hands-on with designs and continue delivering products. As a Principal UX Designer, I learned to leverage my expertise and experience to contribute to leadership decisions without being a manager. I have the influence to define and drive processes and initiatives, making a wide impact on the organization. I prefer coaching others to up-level their skills by sharing my knowledge and acting as a culture ambassador, demonstrating core values to my team as a mentor and role model rather than as a manager.
