Over the past six months, our team has closely examined two prominent players in the field: Cursor Pro and Claude Code. With Cursor Pro boasting a staggering $9 billion valuation and Claude Code achieving a remarkable 72.5% success rate on the SWE-bench, it’s clear that we are witnessing a significant shift in how developers approach coding.


Key Insights from Our Experience

The Fundamental Difference: Indexing vs. CLI Tools

Our exploration revealed a crucial distinction in how these two platforms handle codebases.

Cursor Pro: Embracing the Indexing Approach

Cursor Pro operates by indexing the entire codebase, providing a familiar environment reminiscent of VS Code. Here are some of the key benefits we experienced:

  • Familiar Environment: The interface is intuitive and user-friendly.

  • Quick Start: Our team adapted swiftly, minimizing downtime.

  • Visual Feedback: Real-time suggestions enhance motivation and productivity.

  • Fixed Cost: At $20 per month, budget planning becomes straightforward.

Claude Code: Mastery of CLI Tools

In contrast, Claude Code offers a refreshing alternative by eschewing indexing in favor of command-line interface (CLI) tools such as grep and find. This approach brings several advantages:

  • LLM Freedom: The absence of indexing constraints allows for more flexible coding.

  • More Accurate Results: CLI tools enable precise analysis and insights.

  • Extended Sessions: Developers can engage in autonomous work sessions lasting over 45 minutes.

  • Powerful Models: Access to robust models like Sonnet and Opus enhances capabilities.

Multi-Agent Features: A Game Changer

The introduction of multi-agent functionality marks a significant innovation in Cursor Pro 1.0. The August 2025 updates included:

  • Background Agent: Multiple AI agents can operate concurrently.

  • BugBot: Automated code reviews and bug detection streamline workflows.

  • Agent Mode: Facilitates end-to-end task completion across files.

  • Git Worktrees: Supports parallel development on different branches.

Our Experience with Claude Code’s Multi-Agent System


One of the most striking aspects of Claude Code is its ability to run multiple agents simultaneously. During one of our collaborative sessions, we tasked the system with:

Both platforms have demonstrated their potential to enhance productivity. Cursor Pro's intuitive interface has empowered even novice developers to create applications with ease. Our frontend team noted significant improvements in their React and Next.js projects, thanks to features like the "Magic" tab completion, which anticipates developer intent.


On the other hand, Claude Code has proven invaluable for larger-scale projects. For instance, Intercom's experience in developing AI tools they "wouldn't normally have the bandwidth for" mirrors our own. We have successfully condensed weeks of effort—such as adding language support—into mere days. Notable successes include @mattzcarey's system for auto-generating pull requests from GitHub issues and @dvyio's autonomous refactoring of 75 files in just over an hour.


Evaluating the Advantages


In our assessment, the standout advantage of Claude Code lies in the reliability and consistency of its models. While Cursor’s integration of GPT-5 is noteworthy, Claude’s results are consistently dependable, eliminating the need for frequent model switching.


Cost Considerations
The cost factor is crucial. Claude Code’s direct API access is significantly more economical than Cursor’s Max Mode, particularly during periods of heavy usage. The integration of CLI tools has also illuminated the power of the hooks system and commands feature, enabling single-command operations that streamline git workflows and code analysis.


Opus Plan Mode has emerged as a favorite feature among our team. Although continuous use of Opus may not be cost-effective, its application during the planning phase—while leaving coding tasks to Sonnet—maximizes both efficiency and cost-effectiveness.


Choosing the Right Tool for the Job


Our IDE-focused team members lean towards Cursor Pro for daily coding tasks and rapid prototyping. Its fixed pricing simplifies budgeting, and new team members find the learning curve manageable. Conversely, we turn to Claude Code for complex multi-step tasks, legacy system migrations, and enterprise automation projects. Its robust capabilities shine in scenarios that demand autonomous reasoning.


Keeping Up with Recent Developments


We’ve also explored new features in both platforms, including Cursor’s GPT-5 support, Linear integration, and CLI agent functionalities introduced in August 2025. Claude Code’s Plan Mode and Claude Squad for multi-agent management have transformed our operational dynamics.


Conclusions and Recommendations


After six months of intensive use, we conclude that AI-assisted development is no longer optional; it’s a necessity. Cursor Pro is ideal for teams focused on traditional IDE workflows, while Claude Code excels in projects requiring advanced automation.


Our Recommendations:

  • For daily development and frontend tasks → Opt for Cursor Pro.

  • For legacy migrations and extensive refactoring → Choose Claude Code.

  • For new teams → Start with Cursor Pro.

  • For budget-sensitive projects → Consider Claude Code's cost advantages.


Final Thoughts: We encourage teams to test both tools with small projects. Many organizations, including ours, adopt a hybrid approach—leveraging Cursor for routine tasks and Claude Code for more complex challenges.
