Software Engineer (Rust)

We’re a small team building a new video-creation app for Windows and Mac. Our goal is to empower millions of educators and creators with an easy-to-use storytelling tool. We want to help spotlight the world’s ideas without the struggles of using complex video software.

We’re looking for a Founding Engineer for our team — maybe that’s you? 👀

What’s the role about?

• Creating a high-performance native app using Rust and Typescript.

• Build media pipelines using FFmpeg, GStreamer and OS-level APIs.

• Shipping features and iterating to understand what works and what doesn’t.

• Improving the reliability of our products and services.

• Contributing to open-source projects that help us and our products.

We’re looking for someone with:

1. High-agency who loves solving problems and shows up consistently.

2. Has been actively programming for 2-3 years and built a body of work that speaks louder than their resume.

3. Can demonstrate experience with Rust or other low level languages (C/C++).

4. Quick to learn new technologies and picking the right tool for the job.

5. Has built 0 → 1 before and isn’t afraid of risky bets.

6. Familiarity with Cloud providers: AWS/GCP etc is a neat bonus.

What’s the team like?

We’re 4 people → Varsha, Namratha, Pranav and Sid. Learn more about us here.

We’re based out of Bangalore and communicate via Discord. We’d love for you to join us in-person a couple of times each week to work, but remote is fine too. You will work most closely with Sid and Pranav.

Sid takes care of design + frontend + multimedia and Pranav handles systems + cloud. We’ve previously built (and sold!) scap together and are active OSS contributors to tauri, remotion, outline, posthog and supabase — all of which we use at Helmer! ✨

What would my compensation be?

A mix of cash + equity 🚀

• Our budget is ₹60k-1L/month, or about ~USD 1000/m.

• We’d prefer a contract for now until our company setup is complete.

• Since we’re very early, there aren’t any other perks/benefits currently.

• The exact value of equity on offer is hard to pin-point as we’re in the middle of a fundraise and incorporating abroad, but expect it to be substantial.

How do you hire?

1. After you apply we’ll have a short call to get to know you + your work better.

2. We’ll work on a small feature together for a week as a paid work trial.

3. If we enjoy working with each other, we’ll send a proper contract and make it official!

Any tips?

1. Let your work speak — we don’t care as much for degrees/past companies.

2. Write some Rust! We don’t currently have the bandwidth to teach/mentor, so we’d prefer onboarding someone who’s got the basics dialled down or is quick to learn.

3. Avoid corporate jargon and “fluffiness” in your code and in your comms.
