CounterScore — The Fan App for Figure SkatingWhat if fans had a counter-score to official judging?CounterScore is a mobile app for Android and iOS that allows figure skating fans to independently evaluate performances according to official ISU rules and compare the community's assessment with the judges' result.<h3>One performance. One CounterScore.</h3>Any fan can launch a CounterScore for a specific performance by uploading its official judging protocol. Once launched, it becomes available to everyone.Other fans can submit their own assessments to the same CounterScore. Instead of creating thousands of individual rescores, the community builds one shared assessment of each performance.<h3>Score according to the ISU rules</h3>Users can evaluate each element and component according to the official ISU criteria. The relevant rule will be available directly next to the scoring item, so fans can check the criteria while scoring.This also makes CounterScore educational: you can learn how figure skating judging works while actually evaluating performances.<h3>Protecting the result from manipulation</h3>Collective scoring creates an obvious challenge: what prevents someone from deliberately giving extreme scores to a favorite skater or their rival?CounterScore will use a specially designed algorithm to identify anomalous and systematically distorted scoring patterns and reduce their influence on the collective result.We will not disclose the algorithm's detailed design, because revealing how manipulation is detected could make the system easier to manipulate.The algorithm does not decide who is a “good” or “bad” fan, or which score is “correct.” Its purpose is to prevent deliberately distorted scores from having a disproportionate influence on the community result.<h3>Official Score → CounterScore → CounterGap</h3>Official Score — the result awarded by the judges. CounterScore — the collective independent assessment of the community. CounterGap — the difference between the two.For example:Official Score: 87.42 CounterScore: 90.16 CounterGap: +2.74CounterGap does not mean that fans are right and judges are wrong. It simply shows how closely the community assessment matches the official result — or how far it differs.<h3>Why CounterScore?</h3>The idea of fans independently judging skating performances has existed for years. A similar concept was discussed on Golden Skate in 2019, but as far as we know, it never became a functioning application.CounterScore goes beyond a simple rescore or IJS calculator. Our goal is to turn individual assessments into a collective system of independent judging.One performance. One CounterScore. Thousands of possible assessments.<h3>Built with the skating community</h3>CounterScore is currently under development. We have the concept, technical solution, developer, and approach to protecting the system against score manipulation. Now we need to build, test, and improve it with the skating community.We are looking for fans who are willing to test the idea, challenge our assumptions, find weaknesses, suggest improvements, and help shape the product.<h3>Our experience</h3>CounterScore is not our first figure skating software project.From 2019 to 2022, we developed Figure Skater Content (FS Content), a Windows application providing planned program content, competition and skater information, and a searchable database based on ISU data. The completed application was released and version 1.3.5 is still available.<h3>Help us build CounterScore</h3>CounterScore is being built as a free mobile app for Android and iOS, with no plans for a paid subscription.Development, testing, and maintenance require time and resources. Figure Skater Content (or FS Content for short) is a Windows desktop application dedicated to figure skating. In this context, content refers to a skater’s planned program content — the elements and other details declared for their skating program.The main purpose of the application is to provide quick and convenient access to this information on a computer while watching a live competition broadcast.Additional features include searching for information about competitions and skaters, as well as birthday reminders for figure skaters.
