Real inventory management, for humans
In most small businesses, one person handles the inventory, on top of another full-time job. They're the office manager who also does the books, or the shop owner who also runs the till. When they're away, nobody knows where anything is. When they're swamped, the shelves drift away from the spreadsheet. Most people fail at tracking inventory for three reasons:

It's tough. What "low" means, where each box lives and which supplier is slow all sit in one person's head.

It's tedious. Count, type, reconcile, reorder, repeat. Every delivery is more data entry.

It's an endless loop. The moment the sheet is updated, the world moves, and the work only ever reaches "behind."

Classic inventory software made it worse by handing that one person a bigger form: SKU, category, bin, lot number and a dozen more fields. It's the same Excel spreadsheet in a different shape, and it fails the same way. People skip fields, invent their own categories ("Cleaning", "cleaning supplies", "Cleaners") and stop trusting the data.
Tana starts from a different premise: let AI handle it.
Connect ChatGPT, Codex, Claude or any MCP-capable agent to Tana, then talk to it:

"We got twelve boxes of A4 paper and four toner cartridges. Put them in the back office."

"What are we running low on?"

"Draft next week's restock list, grouped by supplier."

The agent adjusts stock, organizes storages, reads the history and suggests purchases, all within your team's normal permissions. The overworked person stops typing and starts deciding. Tana is still a full app on iPhone, Android, Windows and the web, so you can scan a barcode instead if you prefer. The AI is the best way in, not the only one.It started in a chemistry lab, and it was redesigned for businesses. Tana began in a college lab of about 50 people, where it worked because the professor could make everyone log what they took. In a business there is no professor, and only a few people care. A tool that needs everyone to enter data is only as accurate as its laziest user. Tana now asks for just a quantity and free-form notes, and the AI organizes the rest.
