This feasibility study explores methane reduction through biogas production from livestock manure in Uzbekistan. The project aims to convert agricultural waste into renewable energy, replacing coal-based fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 22,380 tCO₂-eq/year. It supports Uzbekistan’s climate goals under the Paris Agreement and contributes to multiple SDGs (3, 7, 9, 11, 13). The initiative also promotes local energy security, sustainable agriculture, and bilateral climate cooperation between Korea and Uzbekistan.

N-GPAT is a digital tool designed to assess, monitor, and report the environmental performance of climate-related projects in Uzbekistan. Led by the Center of Green Economy Projects (CGEP), the tool supports financial institutions and government agencies in evaluating GHG emissions, energy efficiency, biodiversity impact, and alignment with national and international climate goals (NDCs, SDGs, Paris Agreement). The project is being implemented in two phases, focusing on tool design, pilot testing, sectoral expansion, and integration of advanced technologies like AI and blockchain. N-GPAT aims to enhance transparency, attract green investments, and accelerate Uzbekistan’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

As the head of the technical evaluation team, I contributed to piloting the National Green Taxonomy, developed with support from the World Bank. My responsibilities included: - Conducting an in-depth review of the draft taxonomy, assessing its structure, sectoral scope, and alignment with international frameworks (e.g., EU Taxonomy). - Providing expert input to edit and refine Technical Screening Criteria (TSC) for key economic activities, ensuring environmental objectives and performance thresholds were relevant to Uzbekistan’s context. - Leading the pilot testing of TSC within a commercial banking environment (SQB), using real-world projects to test the feasibility and clarity of the criteria. - Evaluating green project proposals against the draft taxonomy, determining eligibility and classification based on climate mitigation and adaptation criteria. - Compiling and authoring the final pilot project report, highlighting lessons learned, challenges, and recommendations for the national rollout of the Green Taxonomy.

The project focuses on accelerating the discovery and development of cost-effective, safe, and environmentally sustainable Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs). The goal is to create a robust and economically viable method for storing and transporting variable renewable energy (like solar and wind) via hydrogen, which is crucial for decarbonizing the energy sector. Key Research Focus and Activities: The LOHC Challenge: Traditional LOHCs often face issues with poor thermochemistry and low hydrogen capacity. Novel Alcohol-Based LOHCs: Our central hypothesis is that alcohol-based LOHCs, such as ethanol, can overcome these limitations. Comprehensive Evaluation: We are rigorously evaluating the discharging and charging catalytic chemistries of ethanol LOHC (thermochemically and electrochemically), developing kinetic models for these reactions, and using these models to assess the techno-economics and sustainability of deploying this system in regional and global supply chains. Discovery Platform: Building on the ethanol insights, we are developing a chemistry-cognizant molecule discovery platform to explore and validate novel alternative alcohol-based LOHCs and assess their economic and environmental impacts against current carriers. Broader Impacts & Team Development: This multidisciplinary project requires expertise from the atomic/molecular to the global scale. Beyond the core research, the project is committed to: Training: Training the next generation of diverse STEM engineers. Mentorship: Mentoring students from underrepresented groups through programs like LSAMP and the AISES student chapter. Community Engagement: Engaging with an Alaskan village and local educators to demonstrate the advantages of these next-generation energy storage and transportation technologies.
